One 5am bus ride to Amsterdam and one short flight later, I arrived in Copenhagen! Pleasantly surprised by the metro system, I was met at the station by none other than……….EMILY! After seeing her in Imperia last year, it was so good to be reunited with her again! Even better, Dennis and Salim (two friends of ours, whom i’ve not seen in 2 years) were there as well! Salim was visiting Emily just before i got in and Dennis lives in the city as well! After the reunion, they brought me back to Emily’s apartment which was really lovely. Brand new, plenty of space and incredible insulation – just lovely. I was introduced to Emily’s housemates, Heidi and Gauthier (otherwise known as Gucci), who are an absolute delight. We spent the entire evening just drinking tea and chatting. Eventually, Salim had to leave for his flight, Dennis left to head back and Emily had to hit the sack for an early rise. After a long day of travelling, it was such a perfect and wholesome evening ❤️
The next day was taken up by two walking tours around the city. While only intending to do just the one tour, our guide was so incredible (hmu for the tour details) that I immediately decided to do the second one from the same guide! I got to see the sights & neighbourhoods around Copenhagen and learn a great deal of the history behind the city. This tour was made even better by the friendly group I was with so much so that after the close to 4.5 hours (total), I had made a few new friends 😊. After a day of walking, I came home to a dinner party! Heidi had three Danish friends over and the combined 7 of us had a great dinner with Christmas themed food (expertly made by Heidi and Emily as well) and sparkling conversations.
Day 3 was a rather shorter day as I had decided to sleep in a little (winter weather is the best for sleeping indeed). After finally heading out the apartment, I spent the day visiting museums and learning about more about various parts of Danish history and art. The Viking sections were exceptionally interesting as my knowledge on the subject was rather superficial. The ceremonial viking horns were so incredibly beautiful I had to double back and admire it till the museum closed! The day wrapped up with Emily introducing me to a communal dinner concept! This involved paying for dinner and being seated with other people (your party and you of course) to have a communal style dinner. The food was really great, the conversation even better and it was just nice to catch up with Emily proper (she had a busy schedule as she was not on holiday as I was).
My last full day in Copenhagen involved me visiting all the central Christmas markets, walking through a hippie commune (Freetown Christiania) and exploring parts of the city I had not seen, on foot. The hippie commune was an new experience as I had yet to see one before! Following my own walking adventure, I headed to Emily’s Yoga studio (she’s a very skilled Yoga instructor) for my first introduction into Yoga. Yes, I DID YOGA. It was not as hard as I had anticipated but not an easy thing all the same. Dennis had joined me as well and it was a first for both of us (I think!). After the session, we headed back to the apartment to end my stay the same way it began, with tea and insightful/hilarious conversation. I also finally got around to trying Danish pastries having bought a bunch for the supper and yes, it was definitely as good as the reputation suggests!
It was genuinely tough to say goodbye to everyone, both the old friends I was reunited with and the new friends I had made. Everyone had made me feel so welcomed and made sure I had such a good time despite their busy schedules. The only comfort I take is that I know it won’t be long before I see them again.
Such a blessing ❤️
