Taking an overnight train to Vienna seemed easy and became even more luxurious when I realized I had an ENTIRE cabin to myself. Views, cold cuts and Brooklyn 99, I had an amazing ride. Before heading to Slovakia, I had a day in Vienna before heading over (Vienna was on the way so I decided to stop for a day to see the city!) It was a little hard orientating myself with few people speaking English to me but with some perseverance (& some wonderfully helpful locals) I found my way around the city. Managed to see some of the touristy spots within the city and try some local cuisine (Wiener Schnitzel) recommended by another globetrotter (@Davidgaye). After a short stop, it was time to head over to Slovakia!
A one-hour bus-ride later and I had reached Bratislava (and I got to see some gigantic windmills for the first time). Waiting for me was none other than my Slovakian-main man… Michal!! After not seeing each other for months, it was awesome to hang out again. First things first, we had to find a bar and try some of that delicious Slovakian beer (needless to say, it was stunning). After some catching up in the city, we headed to Michal’s hometown of Malacky (30 mins away from Bratisalava). There I settled in and met his parents, followed by a solid dinner of Ribs, Potatoes & Beer (which was spectacular, needless to say). The next few days consisted of sight-seeing with Michal around Bratislava & hanging with his family (and finally meeting the girlfriend I’ve heard so much about 😀 )
The prices of the beer was one thing I LOVED SO MUCH. The most expensive pint I bought was 1.80 Euro and the cheapest was 1.10 EUROS!!! I literally couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the bill the first time we ordered pints. What a far cry from the 10-12 dollar pints back at home! Plus, Michal’s family has an amazing hobby of making their own alcohol so each night I was there, we’d spend the post-dinner periods having some of their home-made alcohol which ranged from 60 – 69%!! Bratislava and Slovakia (in general) completely surpassed my expectation with amazing food, outstanding drinks and simply, lovey people!
Can’t wait to be back ❤️
